Day 3: Winchcombe to Charlton Kings

This was the view from our bedroom window at the White Hart Inn. There was an Irish band playing last night but by the time the English ladies sitting beside us for dinner stopped talking, there wasn't time to listen to the band. But the truth was we didn't have tickets and we were too tired! Just across the road from our accommodation we found these stocks, where the petty criminals would spend time being shamed. These stocks were different in that they only had 7 holes. Turns out one of the local mischief makers only had one leg, back then there was no mercy for the disabled! As we headed out of town we walked past a very extensive veggie garden before beginning our first climb for the day. The huge advantage with all these climbs is the superb views we have of this lovely countryside. We're noticing that the English say 'lovely' often so while in England do as the English do.
Belas Knap Long Barrow was a particular highlight to look out for today. We came to a field with a long valley in it which was covered with lovely wildflowers. Ammie was convinced that she had found it and took extensive photos satisfied that another historic landmark had been suitably recorded. As we came up over the next hill there was Belas Knap Long Barrow! We all had a good laugh as we told Ammie that she doesn't have a future as an archeologist. Here is the real deal with the explanation about it, if you can be bothered reading it. A lovely wood provided welcome shade for us and a dry pathway,
bringing us to Postlip Hall Farm
A long walk up to Cleeve Hill finished with lunch outside the Cleeve Hill Golf Club. Much of our afternoon walk was over open common land with exceptionally rewarding views.
We were on the top of the escarpment for a long time before descending through Prestbury Hill Reserve, where we came across a man with his head in the bushes. We asked what he was looking at so he pointed out some butterflies. The Small Blue is the smallest butterfly in England. Ammie and myself spent quite some time trying to get a photo.
A long day's walking finished with another Woods, Dowdeswell and into Charlton Kings. Our B&B, Detmore House, was waiting for us up a long driveway. Not what you want after walking extra miles because we managed to get lost during the day.
But the walk was so worth it and Detmore House was a most welcome and delightful retreat at the end of the day. We had another long walk for dinner but again another great meal. We literally fell into a bed when we eventually arrived back.
